This week the decisions got made somewhere other than the staffroom. Google switched Gemini on for students of every age inside Google Classroom, turning a question most schools had not yet asked into a setting they already held. In Palau, Pacific leaders endorsed the region's first AI principles, choosing to write their own rules rather than inherit someone else's. And a survey doing the rounds says student enthusiasm for AI is cooling even as appetite for AI that adapts to them stays high. Running underneath all of it is the ERO report that landed while this digest was on hiatus, which is the single most useful thing an NZ school leader could read right now.

  1. Google moved Gemini access for primary-aged students from a deliberate opt-in to an admin console toggle, shifting a pedagogical decision into an IT one.

Platform moves

Schools caught flat-footed after Google makes Gemini available to all students

Google extended Gemini in Google Classroom to K-12 students of all ages from 10 August, having previously limited it to those aged 18 and over. The change reaches more than 150 million users globally and left many districts deciding at short notice whether to permit or restrict access. Microsoft's Copilot still requires administrator activation for users aged 13 and over, while OpenAI and Anthropic restrict or limit access for minors.

It is a setting inside your own domain, and the decision now sits with whoever holds the admin console. In a lot of kura that is an external IT provider or a single part-time staff member, not the principal and certainly not the board. ERO found in July that only about a quarter of schools have a formal AI policy at all, which means a tool is now reachable by Year 1 ākonga in many schools with nothing written behind it. Two things worth doing this week: find out who your Workspace admin is, and ask them where the Gemini setting currently sits for each year level. Under IPP3A the school, not Google, remains the agency collecting that information.

Pacific leaders endorse the region's first AI technology principles

At the 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Palau, held from 30 August to 4 September, leaders endorsed the Pacific Digital and Artificial Intelligence Technology Principles. The principles will guide development of the region's first AI governance framework, which leaders are due to consider in 2027. Forum foreign ministers had backed them in August alongside a Pacific Regional Approach to Safer Digital Spaces, prompted by concerns about the effects of social media platforms on young people.

He aha te take? Why it matters for AotearoaAotearoa is a Forum member, so this is our region's framework and our government helped endorse it. It also lands an uncomfortable comparison. ERO asked for a national AI framework for NZ schools on 30 July and we still do not have one, while the region has now agreed principles built explicitly on Pacific values and priorities rather than imported wholesale from elsewhere. For schools with large Pasifika communities there is something practical here as well. When the framework arrives it will carry language about data, collective interest and values that whānau may recognise more readily than Ministry guidance does, and it sits naturally alongside the same argument for Māori data sovereignty. Worth watching closely as a model for what a values-first national framework could actually look like.

Fresh faces, AI fears: 4,000 new teachers gear up for New York City's first day of school

More than 4,000 new teachers attended orientation in Brooklyn ahead of the New York City school year, with AI in the classroom among their stated concerns. The Education Department is hiring around 6,600 teachers this year to meet state-mandated class size reductions. Detailed AI guidelines had still not been released, following criticism of earlier draft policies.

Why it matters for AotearoaThe parallel worth noticing is that a system far larger and better resourced than ours has had years to produce AI guidance its teachers trust and still has not managed it. Our approach has been guidance-led with a great deal left to school and teacher discretion, and ERO's July findings suggest that is producing wide variation rather than considered local decisions. For beginning teachers here the gap is sharper again. The provisionally certificated years are when practice habits set, and most PCTs will take their AI norms from whatever their department already does without discussing it. If you mentor a PCT this term, put AI use on the induction agenda explicitly rather than leaving them to infer it.

AI hype fades, but students still want smarter study tools

A Quizlet survey distributed by Stacker reports that around 85 percent of high school and college students use AI for assignments and 98 percent say adaptive study tools matter to them, while only 18 percent feel confident about their progress. It sits alongside April 2026 Gallup and Walton Family Foundation polling showing Gen Z excitement about AI fell 14 percentage points in a year. The report also finds teachers mostly use AI to generate classroom materials rather than to support how students actually study.

He aha te take? Why it matters for AotearoaRead the provenance before the numbers. This is a survey by a company that sells study tools, reporting that students want study tools, drawn from a US sample, so treat the percentages as a hypothesis about NZ ākonga rather than a finding about them. What does travel is the mismatch it describes: adults using AI to make resources faster, students wanting something that responds to where they are actually stuck. That gap is familiar ground for RTLB and learning support, where adaptive practice genuinely can give a learner more repetitions than adult time allows. The caution is that a tool marketed on personalisation is not the same thing as a designed intervention, and IPP3A still applies to everything it collects along the way.

Ready or not: how are schools responding to artificial intelligence?

ERO's national study found generative AI is now embedded in NZ schools, with more than 90 percent of school leaders, over 80 percent of teachers and around 75 percent of students using it. 57 percent of teachers, rising to 72 percent of secondary teachers, said AI is having a negative effect on students' critical thinking. Around 40 percent of secondary students admitted using AI inappropriately for schoolwork, and only about a quarter of schools have a formal policy setting out how students should use it. ERO called for a national framework to lift AI literacy across the sector.

He aha te take? Why it matters for AotearoaThis is the evidence base for every AI conversation in an NZ school for the next year, so it is worth reading rather than reading about. The headline finding is not that AI arrived, it is that it arrived considerably faster than governance did, and ERO's call for a national framework puts that responsibility somewhere specific rather than leaving each school to invent its own. For boards, the quarter-with-a-policy figure is the one to take to your next meeting. For kaiako, the critical thinking finding deserves careful handling: teachers reporting a perceived effect is real and important evidence about classroom experience, and it is not the same as a measured decline in student thinking. The useful response is not alarm, it is to look hard at what your assessment design is actually asking ākonga to do.

What to do with this

School leadersFind out this week who holds your Google Workspace admin console and where the Gemini setting currently sits for each year level. That is now a governance decision rather than an IT one, and after ERO's July findings, "we hadn't got to a policy yet" is not a position you want to be explaining to your board.
KaiakoIf AI is available to your class by default, say out loud what you expect of them. Ākonga infer the rules from what their teachers do and do not mention, and ERO found 40 percent of secondary students already using AI in ways their school would not sanction.
RTLB and learning supportAdaptive practice tools have real potential for ākonga who need more repetitions than adult time allows, and none of that potential survives a poor data agreement. Ask what the tool collects, where it is held, and whether the school or the vendor is the agency under IPP3A before it goes anywhere near a learner.
